Bye Bye David Winderlich MLC – What a Short Career! Watch out for the Democrats now: we have nothing more to lose!
This morning’s resignation by David Winderlich MLC as a member of the Democrats is accepted with regret. I understand David intends to stand in South Australia’s March 2010 election as an independent. We must wish him well in the future.
The Australian Democrats give their parliamentarians much freedom: we dont sack dissenters, though we do ask why. David is not the first Democrat parliamentarian to strike out alone. Somehow, being an MP goes to the head of many and they conclude they dont need a party behind them. Such individuals have a poor record of later success.
In my opinion, his prospects for re-election are slim without the party’s support and the limited time he has had to develop his skills and profile as a SA parliamentarian.
His leaving prompts the re-opening of pre-selection for Australian Democrats lead candidate for the South Australian election. We regard a seat in the Legislative Council as winnable for the Democrats and expect a quality field to contest pre-selection.
The Democrats will back the chosen candidate to the hilt and fight the SA election with all our resources and energy.
No doubt David will seek to exchange preferences with us.
So watch out for the Democrats now! We have nothing more to lose and everything to gain. Our rise is irresistable.

While I certainly disagree with his going Independent without consulting with the Australian Democrats first. By going earlier than Nov 23 as stated, promised, threatened. I equally believe it is important to treat Hon. David honourably and party-constitutionally.
The key core concerns were very well expressed by SA Divisional President Max Baumann. We are now free to refocus on rebuilding the Party, it’s membership and people where Democrat people rule. It’s about raising awareness and transforming, not just changing democracy.
