“Stay The Bloody Hell Away!” Fran Bailey Designs Ad Campaign For Rudd Government?
Who can forget the Lara Bingle bungle – the tourism campaign that offended the Poms and marked the career climax of Fran Bailey, Australia’s then Minister for Tourism.
The ALP has learnt a trick or two from good old Fran – known around McEwen as “The Pink Fink”.
Yes, that baby faced geek we call our Prime Minister and his cabinet of motley ministers have drawn on the “Fran Bailey Little Pink Book On Thinking Big” and launched an advertising campaign to scare off asylum seekers.
Where else could such a bizarre scheme have come from? We can’t blame Julia Gillard for this one, she is more direct. No, this subtlety can only be the work of the conservative coalition’s shadow Minister for Absurdity and chief king maker, Fran Bailey.
“Be Afraid You Refugee Person You!”
The creative brief was to ‘educate’ refugees that a boat ride to Australia is a very, very, very bad idea.
Saatchi & Saatchi’s Ronald Peiris said the campaign would incorporate “street drama” to take its message directly to the people”.
Yes! Sounds more like Fran by the second, channeling her argument techniques and rhetorical flourishes.
Actors will play people smugglers, and warn locals their grubby little lower class efforts to escape poverty and Sri Lanka will end in disappointment. Fran is yet to sign for the leading role of principal scary person – but we can rule out Lara Bingle.
The advertisements leave unstated what will happen to those who stay in Sri Lanka – don’t expect any of our elected politicians to discuss that outcome any time soon.
Overboard Suggestions!
One could argue this is a step up from throwing children overboard, another technique from the Howard years – and reasonably successfully too, as he was re-elected.
Ronald Peiris added: “A lot of rumours are being spread that people can make it,” and “What we want to tell the people is that what you hear is not what really happens.”
Yes, the good news bears of Australia will be telling it like it is:
“Stay away you pesky peasants! We don’t want you!”
Nice message: warm, humanitarian and enabling.
That resolved, the next pressing question for Queenslander Rudd is: What to do about coral reef bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef?
Relax Kev! Fran has a solution to that too!
“Cover it with Shade cloth” - as Fran first pronounced in 2006!
